While it is true that the traditional holiday season for most people continues to be in the months of July and August, the reality is that more and more people are opting for the month of September to take their break. This is a way to move away from the most touristy places during peak season and enjoy quieter holiday breaks, but still with good weather.
But, where to travel in September? Whether you prefer beach or mountain destinations, September has a wide range of possibilities to offer you an unforgettable holiday. Would you like to know some of the best?
Canary Islands
The Canary archipelago has virtually all-year-around good and sunny weather, so it is not surprising that September is a good time for a holiday. This month represents a quiet time for any of the islands in the archipelago, not only in terms of visitors, but also in terms of temperature, since the trade winds blow more gently.
Which island to visit? That depends on what you are looking for. If you want to enjoy lush forests full of species that you won’t find anywhere else, you can’t miss out on Tenerife, La Palma or La Gomera. But if you want to surf or enjoy some of the sand dunes, don’t hesitate to travel to Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura or Lanzarote.
La Manga
As is the case with almost any other area of the Mediterranean coast, in July and August it is practically impossible to enjoy a holiday without a large number of tourists. However, in September things change and, although there are still tourists, La Manga offers you the possibility to enjoy some of the most spectacular Mediterranean beaches.
The beaches of Cabo de Palos on the shores of the Major Sea of La Manga offer you the opportunity to enjoy diving experiences where you can get to know the underwater meadows of Posidonia. Meanwhile, areas usually full of tourists like Zoco or Plaza Bohemia continue to offer you the best leisure, but in a much quieter environment.
Santander
Northern Spanish cities like Santander are some of the most common summer spots. However, September has gradually become a month chosen by more and more visitors thanks to its moderate climate and a lower concentration of tourists.
Visiting Santander not only allows you to enjoy its historical center and its characteristic architecture of houses with glazed galleries overlooking the sea, but you can also enjoy excellent gastronomy and products such as anchovies, and even improve your golf approach at one of the six golf courses located in the region.
In addition, the temperature still allows for some beach swimming for the braver hearts. And those who prefer another type of contact with nature can always visit the famous Cabárceno Park, where you can see animals of all kinds in a natural environment.
Logroño
When thinking about where to go on holiday in September, many people automatically dismiss the north, thinking that it will already be too cold. However, even though the temperature is lower than in the south, in places like Logroño you can find other great attractions such as the grape harvest festival. And there is no doubt that wine and its culture are rooted in this land that has a lot to offer.
Logroño is not only a perfect land for wine lovers, but also offers you the opportunity to explore its many medieval villages full of fascinating stories. In addition, you cannot visit Logroño without enjoying the rich Riojan cuisine, as well as visiting some of its most spectacular architectural monuments such as the church of San Bartolomé, next to the old walls, or the cathedral of La Redonda, with its twin towers and vaulted portico.
Valencia
Valencia is one of the best places to travel in September. Think about it, the crowds of tourists have disappeared and the temperature drops to a moderate warmth that invites you to discover the city, wandering its streets and beaches. Moreover, at this time it is much easier to find better accommodations and, above all, at a lower price than in high season.
This is your chance to explore its historic center and learn about the history of some of its most illustrious figures such as the Borgia family, whose chapel you can visit in Valencia Cathedral. But, of course, if there is something you cannot miss in Valencia, whatever time of year you go, it is enjoying a good paella or a glass of horchata accompanied by fartons.
San Sebastián
San Sebastián in September means cinema thanks to the International Film Festival of San Sebastián, but if you are not a fan of the seventh art nor are interested in seeing some of the premieres or attending events related to the festival, there is still much to see.
Choosing San Sebastián as a destination, you cannot miss walking along the promenade of La Concha, contemplating the Cantabrian Sea and the characteristic architecture of its promenade and the houses along it. But you also cannot miss the old town or the cuisine in the city, an excellent choice for those looking for a relaxed plan.
El Rompido (Huelva)
If you don’t know where to travel in September, you should know that Andalusia, and specifically El Rompido in Huelva, may be a perfect destination if you are looking for tranquility and relaxation by the sea. The Atlantic Ocean bathes the coats of this small fishing village, where you can find dunes and pine forests, a mix of landscapes that won’t leave you indifferent.
Amid virgin nature and crystal clear waters, you can also enjoy the best local products such as Huelva prawns, which you’ll find in any bar or restaurant around the famous Plaza de las Sirenas. A chance for the most relaxed holiday, without queues or crowds.
